One of the most important skills in digital marketing is learning. Every year, I look out for books that improve my thought process concerning marketing products and more importantly, ideas. Some of these books are not about marketing but about business and products. It helps to understand non-marketing business processes as they help expand your horizon and help you have a more holistic view of business. These 6 books have had the most impact on my career.

1. Traction: A startup guide to getting customers — Gabriel Weinberg and Justin Mares

In Traction, Gabriel and Justin write about marketing channels companies can take advantage of. It’s a great primer on getting started with digital advertising if you’ve never done it before. Traction’s goal is to get you to acquire customers and achieve ‘traction’. Worth noting here is that there are newer marketing channels since this book was last published and revised. It’s up to marketers to keep abreast of industry changes.

2. Growth Hacker Marketing: A Primer on the future of PR, Marketing, and Advertising — Ryan Holiday

In Growth Hacker Marketing, Ryan pens an absolutely brilliant primer on the future of marketing, advertising and PR. Ryan suggests you do not chase marketing stunts that have 0 impacts on your target audience and bottom line. Growth Hacker Marketing’s motto is simple: launch campaigns at targeted audiences and ensure your product is developed to go viral.

3. All Marketers Are Liars: The Underground Classic That Explains How Marketing Really Works–and Why Authenticity Is the Best Marketing of All — Seth Godin

Seth Godin is one of the most respected minds in modern marketing. I started reading Seth Godin when I was 17 and he’s had a great impact on how I think about storytelling, virality and spreading ideas. In this book, Seth thoroughly explains why marketing must be authentic and products must match marketing’s promises. A campaign that takes advantage of the best marketing techniques will fail if the product isn’t up to par. Seth provides real-life marketing case studies and matches them with tactics you can learn and use.
